AI Works Best When You Decide How It Fits

The question

Why does AI help some people at work so much more than others?

The short answer

New research from Charter found that the strongest factor in benefiting from AI is agency: having a say in how AI fits into your job. Use AI often, but decide yourself where it helps, where you check it, and where your own judgment comes first.

By Engracia Sleeswijk

You were handed a new AI tool. Someone else decided where it goes. And now you are expected to make it work.

That feeling of having no say is not a small detail. It may be the whole difference.

What the research found

Charter released its AI Pulse report on 21 October 2026, based on more than 5,000 surveys and 90 interviews with AI users.

The top factor that let people benefit from AI was agency. Being involved in how AI fits into your job, and having influence over how you use it.

Advanced use, such as building agents, had far less impact than simply using AI again and again.

The same report found that executives are about twice as likely as workers to trust AI over their own judgment. The people with the most say are also the ones most ready to hand over their thinking.

What people are asking for

Elon University published a national survey on 13 October 2026, fielded by SSRS among 1,158 adults in the United States in August.

52% of workers said training and guidance about the limits of AI, and about when human judgment should take priority, would be extremely or very helpful.

So people are not asking for more tools. They are asking where the line is.

One step for this week

Take one task you now do with AI.

Write three short lines next to it. What AI does well here. What you always check. Where your own judgment decides.

Share those three lines with one colleague or your manager. That is how agency starts. Not with permission, but with a clear proposal.

What I am learning

I am still learning where my own line sits, and it moves as the tools change. Writing it down each time is what keeps the decision mine.

You do not need to trust AI more. You need to decide how it fits.

Pick one task. Draw your three lines. Share them this week.

If you want help finding where AI fits in your work, find your route.

Where in your work should your judgment always come first?

I use AI as a thinking and editing partner. The experience and opinions are mine.
