Your Audience Can Tell When Nobody Wrote It
The question
Will using AI for my social media content cost me trust?
The short answer
It can, when the content hides who made it or no longer sounds like you. Recent 2026 surveys show people punish hidden AI content but trust named experts. Use AI for the groundwork, keep your own thinking and voice in the post, and be open about how you work.
You know your post should go out today. You are busy, so AI writes it. It reads fine. It just does not sound like anyone.
And your audience notices more than you think.
What people are saying
In a Clutch survey of 601 consumers, run in August 2026 and published in September, 53% said they are less likely to buy from a brand they know uses AI in its social media content. Nearly 90% said brands and creators should disclose AI-generated content.
The same survey found that 42% see AI positively for educational content. So people are not against AI. They are against content that pretends.
A separate Clutch survey of 408 consumers in the United States, published in June 2026, found that 93% say it matters that a brand's communications feel like they came from a real person.
Where trust comes from
Raptive surveyed 3,083 consumers in the United States in September 2026, as Net Influencer reported on 16 October. When an AI answer showed no source, 42% said they would trust it. When a trusted creator or expert was cited, that rose to 75.4%.
That is the part I find hopeful. People do not want less expertise. They want to know whose expertise it is.
Your clients already trust what you say in a meeting. The task is to let that same voice reach the page.
One step for this week
Pick your next post.
Before you open any AI tool, record two minutes on your phone. Answer one question a client asked you this month, in your own words.
Then let AI help with the structure, the order and the length. Not with the opinion.
Read the result out loud. If a sentence is something you would never say to a client, cut it.
What I am learning
I am still learning where the line sits between help and replacement in my own writing. Reading out loud is the most honest test I have found.
You do not need to post more. You need posts that sound like the person people hired.
Record your thinking first. Let AI shape it, not say it. Read every post out loud.

What would your clients recognise as unmistakably yours?
I use AI as a thinking and editing partner. The experience and opinions are mine.
