The Quote Was Six Times the Budget. The Business Was Still Real.
The question
What can a small business do when a proper build is priced for companies ten times its size?
The short answer
Refuse both the agency quote and the makeshift fix. Ask for one documented, tested chain sized for the business you have now.
You open the proposal and it is beautiful. Twelve pages, a timeline, a team of five.
And a number six times what you can spend.
You are not a hobbyist. You have clients, revenue and a reputation. You are just not the size of company that agency was built for. Their smallest project is bigger than your yearly budget for everything.
So you do what many owners do. You go cheap. Someone puts something together for a fraction of the price, and it works for a couple of months. Then a payment does not register, an email goes to the wrong people, and nobody can tell you why, because nobody built it to be understood.
That seems to be the choice. Excellent and out of reach, or affordable and held together with tape.
Refuse both. Not out of stubbornness, but because you don't run the rest of your business that way, and your systems should not be the one sloppy thing in it.
What built properly at your scale means
It is one chain, not a collection of parts. Site, offer, payment, email and follow up are connected and tested end to end, as one system.
It is documented. You can see on one page what happens after a client clicks buy, and why.
It is tested before it is handed over. Not only the happy path, also the failed payment, the double sign up and the refund.
It is sized for now and ready for later. You pay for the business you have, with room for the one you are building.
Four questions to ask any builder
What happens when a payment fails?
Who gets notified, and how?
Can I see the whole chain on one page?
What exactly do I own when you hand it over?
If the answers are vague, the system will be too.
What changes when it works
A client pays, and everything that should happen, happens. Every time, including the days you are not looking.
You get hours back, but that is not the biggest change. The biggest change is that you stop apologising. For delays, for missed steps, for let me check and get back to you.
Small is not the same as makeshift. If you were told the good version is not made for a business your size, that was true a few years ago. It is not true now.
This is what The Turn-Key does. You bring the idea or the expertise. The agreed commercial and digital chain is built, connected, tested and handed over working, with documentation, so you can run it yourself. Start with the intake.
Payments are usually the first thing that gets fixed. They are rarely the last.
